What does asbestos look like and where is it commonly found in industrial properties?

Asbestos was widely used across the construction sector for many years until it was fully banned from use in the UK in 1999. It was popular due to the fact that it has excellent insulation properties and is fire resistant. It was banned because of the adverse effects on human health when asbestos fibres are breathed in, however it is still present in many properties across the country and if your commercial or industrial property was constructed or renovated before the year 2000, then you should assume that it could house asbestos containing materials in or around it.

The HSE has many images of what asbestos can look like, however we always recommend getting an asbestos survey from an asbestos removal company like ourselves to determine if asbestos is present in your property and what risk it poses.

Asbestos can be found across a wide range of areas across an industrial property and as mentioned prior, an asbestos survey should be carried out to determine the type(s) of asbestos present. Some of the most common areas we find and remove it from are -

  • Asbestos cement, which is commonly used outside a property on the roof, chimney flue and guttering
  • Ceiling and floor tiles
  • Lagging around boilers and hot water pipes
  • Panels in fire doors and window frames
  • Toilet cisterns
  • Soffit boards
  • Textured coating which is also know as 'Artex'

There are many more products that could contain asbestos and shows how it is best practice to have an asbestos survey completed by professionals before having the asbestos removed, should asbestos containing materials be highlighted from the survey.

Get in contact with us for more information about having an asbestos survey conducted on your property or for more information on our process to get the asbestos containing materials safely removed.

What qualifications are needed for a business to remove asbestos in the UK?

For us to work with licensable asbestos (which is high intensity work with high levels of exposure to high volumes of asbestos fibres per cubic centimetre), remove and dispose of safely we require two licenses from government bodies. We have these and are as below -

  • A three-year licence awarded by the HSE, enabling us to legally work with asbestos insulation and asbestos insulation board (AIB).
  • A licence to transport hazardous waste, which was presented to us by the Environment Agency.
