Why is asbestos a problem?

Asbestos was used in the UK construction sector for decades and was banned fully in 1999, when it was discovered that it was causing long term lung diseases, such as asbestosis.

This means that if your property was built or renovated before the year 2000 then you should assume that it could contain asbestos.

Although asbestos has now been banned from use in the UK for over 25 years, it is still in 100,000s of properties around the country. This isn't a problem as long as the asbestos containing material isn't disturbed, but lots of businesses like to have it removed for peace of mind, due to the fact that the duty holder is the one responsible for the asbestos containing materials on their property (more can be read about this here).

Asbestos can be found widely around industrial properties and the HSE does a good job of displaying this. When we carry out asbestos surveys, we regularly find asbestos in the following areas -

  • Asbestos cloth, rope and string
  • Asbestos cement sheets and roof tiles
  • Wallboards
  • Ceiling Tiles
  • Ovens and Furnaces
  • Hairdryers
  • Irons
  • Ironing board covers
  • Toasters
  • Stove-top pads
  • Brake-pads and brake-pad linings
  • Clutch facings
  • Floor Tiles
  • Mastics and Sealants
  • Toilet cisterns
  • Posts and fencing
  • Planters
  • Asbestos millboard
  • Sprayed coatings
  • Loose fill insulation
